It is May 14, which brings us to 7 full weeks of lock-down here in South Africa.

For the kids and myself, much of life is going on as usual. We were already home schooling and I am thanking God daily that this was not something thrust upon us during these crazy times as it took me pretty much all of last year to feel like #FeySchoolforHighschool was something we could actually do.

We are missing our get-togethers with friends for coffee, field trips, and other fun, but it isn’t like we were going out daily or even weekly for these events, so while it is a change, it is manageable. Tyson is really missing his jaunts into the community and especially his friend Thato, who he saw at least twice a week. I am missing his jaunts into the community as they gave me 2-4 hours with only one kid in the house and that kid is content to sit in her room listening to music and watching an episode or two on Netflix, so I have lost my afternoon alone time.

Mask making...it was fun for 2 days and now I am over it.

However, my intrepid students are finding new ways to occupy their time. Tyson took what was initially a school project about a Roman Road and made a giant hole that he plans to use as a winter fort. Jori has been attempting to use up all of the makeup she has collected over the years in new and interesting ways. I am also finding new things to do, like sewing masks, reorganizing the house and baking!

In the beginning there was a Roman Road
Now, there is a giant whole, deep enough for Tyson to comfortably sit in

Another big change is that with everyone being home from everything, Amo has been staying home with her mama and aunties and uncle and as of Mother’s Day, her new baby sister Mohau Tinyiko, which loosely translates to Mercy Gifts. We are so thankful that Mohau’s birth was uneventful and that she is safe at home with a family that loves her a lot. It is hard not having the freedom of movement to bring our whole family over there or have their family over here, but we are being extra cautious for the new mom and baby and also for our sweet Mozie who is very susceptible to lung infections.

Thankful these two had a chance to meet Mohau

Darin continues to be busy, as always. He has been managing the distribution of food parcels from various organizations for Take Action and procuring and reselling face masks as they are currently more in demand than water filters. We are very aware of how God continues to provide for our family and how He allows us to be involved both directly and indirectly in providing for our neighbors here. This is not because of anything we have done, but due to His faithfulness through many avenues, including many of you!

Just a fraction of the food we helped sort for vulnerable families

Our family is doing well here in Hammanskraal. We know that things will most likely be getting worse before they get better in many areas of life, but we continue to feel God’s presence with us and His calling on our family to remain in this place we call home.
